Pradhan Mantri Jan Dhan Yojana

Pradhan Mantri Jan Dhan Yojana was launched by Prime Minister of INDIA, Narendra Modi on 28 August 2014. Narendra Modi announced this scheme Pradhan Mantri Jan Dhan Yojana on his first Independence Day speech on 15th August 2014. In English Pradhan Mantri Jan Dhan Yojana (प्रधानमंत्री जन धन योजना) is translated as Prime Minister's People Money Scheme.

The main aim behind starting the scheme Pradhan Mantri Jan Dhan Yojana was to provide universal access to banking facilities starting with basic savings accounts with an overdraft facility of Rs.5000/- after six months and RuPay debit card which included accident insurance cover of Rs.1 lakh and RuPay Kisan Card. Pradhan Mantri Jan Dhan Yojana scheme have given freedom to every Indian Individual and families to open a zero balance account as well as the scheme Pradhan Mantri Jan Dhan Yojana will also provide profits in various ways to the poor families.

The bank accounts opened under the scheme Pradhan Mantri Jan Dhan Yojana will be provided with following benefits:

Benefits of Pradhan Mantri Jan Dhan Yojana (PMJDY)

  • Zero balance savings bank account with RuPay debit card and accidental insurance cover of Rs.1 lakh will be provided by 'HDFC Ergo'.
  • All those who had opened accounts before 26th January 2015 over and above the 1 lakh accident, they will be provided life insurance coverage of Rs.30,000/- provided by LIC.
  • After period of six months from opening bank account, the account holder can avail Rs.5000/- overdraft from the bank account.
  • Account holder will be able to check balance or transfer funds through National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI) by using normal phone which was earlier limited only to smartphones.
  • As well as mobile banking will be made available to poor through National Unified USSD Platform (NUUP) for which all banks and mobile companies have come together.
